First I found independent websites that compared providers side by side. I looked at the the larger companies AT&T and Verizon first, to see what was available so I had something to compare it to. Then I looked up the local cable company, and other local providers. I compared for speed, and also for cost. There are many enticements to sign up, such as rebates, free modems, free installation. Be sure to compare all of these in determining the true cost, and make sure that you are getting the speed that you want.
