Congress Considering Rewriting The Telecom Law

May 26th, 2010 by JanetM

Currently there are four Democratic lawmakers who are interested in reviewing, and possibly making changes, to the current Telecom Law, that was developed in 1996, and are looking to begin this project in June.  However, there are 74 Democratic lawmakers who oppose this project as they feel this would give the FCC more oversight over broadband.  Of course, broadband providers and their lobbyists are protesting this change of the law, and all sides agree that there needs to be more competition within the industry.  The FCC has encouraged slight changes to be made at this time, but that is not making all sides in this issue agreeable.  Taking all things into consideration, it does not seem as though this will be agreed upon to begin in June, which is timeframe that the four Democratic lawmakers would like to begin.

Selection Process for Internet Service Providers in my Area

May 24th, 2010 by JanetM

I found out that relocating can be a bit of a hassle when I was trying to determine who the internet service providers in my area were.  In my old neighborhood, everyone knew who the providers were.  But I am relocating to a new state and I am not sure which of the top providers will have coverage to my new neighborhood.  A coworker told me about a great website that reviews the top ISPs in the country and compares them side by side.  They also update the current deals and promotions every month so that I can watch for the best deal.  They had a convenient interface where I could enter some simple information about my new home.  I found out quickly who offered internet service, and I signed up ahead of time to avoid any downtime issues.  How simple is that?

How to Compare Internet Providers

May 20th, 2010 by JanetM

It’s easier than you think  to compare internet providers and their different plans.  Go online, and you’ll find blogs and websites that put it all together for you. You can also go to the provider websites, and verify where they provide service, and what plans they offer you.  It is really great to see side by side comparisons, because you can look for the speed and type of service you need and compare costs and  extra incentives.  Finding out what is the most economical service that will meet your needs  or what bundle will suit you best is really a snap when you do your research.

Verizon to Increase 4G Service in Rural Areas

May 16th, 2010 by JanetM

Verizon announced last week that they are stepping up their commitment to increase access to the internet.  They are making 4G mobile broadband service available in rural areas throughout the United States.  If you live in a rural area and have suffered through bad cell phone connections and poor dial up service, you know how welcome this development is.  4G service will enable recipients to get email, browse the web, watch videos, download music, and have phone conversations and text messages.  This is just another way that the world is becoming more connected, and for people in remote areas, the opportunity to connect is welcome.

Looking Up Internet Providers in My Area

May 11th, 2010 by JanetM

I looked up internet providers in my area using the web, because I wanted to compare all the available plans. I went online, and looked up the plans for the major providers, AT&T and Verizon, and then compared them to cable and other providers.  It was great to find an independent site that compared everything they offer along with all other providers, so I could see it side by side.  I like to check things out for speed since that is important to me.  I could see the costs, and all the incentives too.  This told me what I am getting and what I am paying for.  I like that!
